Elizabeth had always said that she did not want to "shine a light into peoples' soul", but James V1 and 1 did just that - the Catholics were given much less religious freedom and all of the Elizabethan anti-catholic laws were considerably tightened. So everything the plotters had wanted to achieve was destroyed.  
 The Gunpowder Plot: Terror and Faith in 1605 by Antonia Fraser  
 goes into it in great detail, with the investigation showing Fawkes may well have been an agent provocateur.</description>
