A very odd story, indeed. One question: Are we sure this is a true story? Nineteenth-century newspapers carried an amazing number of stories that were simply hoaxes--stuff invented out of whole cloth by some journalist who needed colorful copy to fill space in his paper. The fact that Angel's execution was not reported until years afterwards, and that many of the basic details (such as her age) vary, makes me wonder.
