My blog is dedicated to researching this man mainly through primary sources. He was no saint, as you say, but there was also alot of very inaccurate propaganda written about him by chroniclers who favoured Mortimer and Isabella - much of which gets repeated without being looked into. And of course there are the new fabrications, such as the ‘Hugh Despenser raped the queen’ one. As you said, no authority at all on that one
