Memorandum of Conditions to which any Person acting as Assistant Executioner is required to conform. ----- (An Assistant Executioner will not be employed by the Governor without the concurrence of the High Sheriff.) ----- 1. An Assistant Executioner is engaged, with the concurrence of the High Sheriff, by the Governor of the prison at which the execution is to take place, and is required to conform with any instructions he may receive from or on behalf of the High Sheriff in connection with any execution for which he may be engaged. 2. A list of persons competent for the office of Assistant Executioner is in the possession of High Sheriffs and Governors: it is therefore unnecessary for any person to make application for employment in connection with an execution, and such application will be regarded as objectionable conduct and may lead to the removal of the applicant's name from the list. 3. Any person engaged as an Assistant Executioner will report himself at the prison at which an execution for which he has been engaged is to take place not later than 4 o'clock on the afternoon preceding the day of execution. 4. He is required to remain in the prison from the time of his arrival until the completion of the execution and until permission is given him to leave. 5. During the time he remains in the prison he will be provided with lodging and maintenance on an approved scale. 6. He should avoid attracting public attention in going to or from the prison; he should clearly understand that his conduct and general behaviour must be respectable and discreet, not only at the place and time of execution, but before and subsequently; in particular he must not give to any person particulars on the subject of his duty for publication. 7. His remuneration will be 1l. 11s. 6d. for the performance of the duty required of him, to which will be added 1l. 11s. 6d. if his conduct and behaviour have been satisfactory. The latter part of the fee will not be payable until a fortnight after the execution has taken place. 8. Record will be kept of his conduct and efficiency on each occasion of his being employed, and this record will be at the disposal of any Governor who may have to engage an assistant executioner. 9. The name of any person who does not give satisfaction, or whose conduct is in any way objectionable, so as to cast discredit on himself, either in connection with the dutires or otherwise, will be removed from the list. 10. The apparatus approved for use at executions will be provided at the prison. No part of it may be removed from the prison, and no apparatus other than approved apparatus must be used in connection with any execution. 11. The Assistant Executioner will give such information, or make such record of the occurrences as the Governor of the prison may require.
